XRACE is a mystery adventure race where a parent and a child aged 6-14 team up to race the clock and other families. Each team, consisting of an adult and one or two children, must locate and complete 10 mystery challenges.
The challenges vary from physical tests like tug-of-war to mental puzzles such as the memory challenge, and knowledge-based tasks like the music challenge. The challenges and course change annually and by location, ensuring no two XRACE events are ever the same.
In every XRACE, your team will face at least 10 unique challenges, each one designed to be achievable and empower the children on your team.
You'll encounter two different types of challenges: mystery challenges and compulsory challenges. You must successfully complete each challenge before you can move on to the next one.
Most of the challenges you'll face will be mystery challenges. You won't know what they are until you receive your challenge cards at the race.
Hot tip: Bring a carabiner or a peg to keep your challenge cards together so you don't lose them!
Each season, teams face several compulsory challenges designed to build stronger bonds. The details for these challenges are given to teams ahead of time, allowing you to work, practice, and train together before race day. This preparation and collaboration is the true value of these challenges, turning them into a team-building experience.
Last year's challenges included dancing, button sewing, and a Ti Rakau challenge.
Two days before your event, visit the location page to find your team's specific start time and wave. On race day, you'll line up in the starting chute according to your assigned time.
After you've collected your team's race T-shirts, transponders, and challenge cards, the announcer will call you into the Start House. Your entire wave will start together, with new waves departing every 10 minutes to prevent congestion on the course.
The challenges must be completed in a specific order, which you'll discover as you go.
Your challenge cards are crucial—they are the key to navigating the course and contain all the instructions you'll need.
When you arrive at a challenge, the first thing you'll do is read your challenge card. Then, a marshal will point you to where you need to start.
Keep in mind that marshals won't provide instructions; all the information you need is on the card. Once you've successfully completed the task, the marshal will confirm your completion and point you toward the next challenge.
The course for each XRACE is unique and takes full advantage of the local geography. Whether you're in a city park or by a beach, the course will vary. You can check your event page for details on the distance and elevation.
The average distance between challenges is between 250 and 350 meters, though some may be up to a kilometer apart. There's no need to run; a fast walk or jog is enough to get your team through the course. Teams of all fitness levels and speeds successfully complete the race.
XRACE is as competitive as you want it to be.
Some teams aim for an age-group trophy or even the overall win, but most don't. The majority of families are there to have a fun outdoor experience, enjoying the challenge of working together and completing the course as a family.
XRACE is designed for families of all fitness levels and abilities. It's the perfect training goal, motivating families to run or walk 3-4km together. Many families have shared how training for and finishing the race as a team was a huge source of pride and accomplishment.
You set your own pace and decide how competitive you want to be.
After you cross the finish line, your team will receive finisher medals. We have a tradition at XRACE where only teammates can place the medal on each other—it's a special moment we hope you'll cherish.
Once you've finished, please remove your team's transponders and place them in the designated bin just past the finish line.
Once the final teams have arrived, we'll begin the prize-giving ceremony. It's a fun celebration where everyone can enjoy each other's company after completing the race.
Trophies will be awarded to the fastest boys and girls in each age group, and one team will be crowned the XRACE champion. We'll also be giving away some awesome spot prizes!
